Kuala Lumpur International Airport
(KLIA)
Malaysia
This
is an architecturally beautiful roof structure at Kuala Lumpur International
Airport (KLIA). Eversendai erected the roof structure of the Main Terminal
Building(MTB) and Contact Pier. The main terminal building roof
structure is made up of keel trusses connected to the top of the conical concrete
columns.
The contact pier is a long building of 900m, connected to the MTB
in the middle. The main trusses are connected to the concrete columns by hinge
bars. The structure was erected using 150t crawler cranes from the ground.
The total job consisted of 9305 tons and erected in 8 months.
KL
International Airport is a destination in itself. It is unique
because it has within its boundaries all that is needed for
business, entertainment and relaxation.
The airport is part and
parcel of the Multimedia Super Corridor where placement of high
technology industries are being actively pursued. KL International
Airport is surrounded by four main cities of Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam,
Seremban and Malacca. The airport is a catchment area and offers
opportunities for a hive of business activities.
Every effort has
been made to create a homely airport with a serene environment
combined with high technologies attractions. Nature and greenery are
part of the airport in line with the "airport in the forest and
forest in the airport" concept.
The natural environment of the
airport is transformed to functions and activities that continue to
enhance nature. The abundant forest areas will be preserved and
transformed into an environment park containing recreational
facilities. For car racing enthusiasts a Formula One Race Track is
located near the airport and Formula One Race is scheduled in March
every year. The track also caters for an array of other activities
throughout the year including motor-cycle and rally racing.
KL
International Airport is close to Malaysia's Administration Capital
- Putrajaya. Putrajaya, the country's new administrative centre is
within 20 minutes away from KLIA and will be a major boost for
investment and trade. The Pan Pacific Hotel Kuala
Lumpur International Airport, is available within walking distance
from the airport terminal building for other airport users to stay
and enjoy all the facilities, close to KLIA.
The airport is built on 10,000 hectares which makes it
one of the largest airport sites in the world. KLIA was completed in
four and a half years with round-the-clock construction work (making
it the fastest airport ever built) undertaken by an international
workforce of 25,000 people (largest number of workers for a
Malaysian project) at a cost of about US$3.5bn and commenced full
commercial operations on June 28, 1998.
